Byron Bay

Cape Byron is Australia's most easterly point and is located on the far north coast of New South Wales. Byron Bay is renowned for its white sandy beaches, pristine surrounding rainforest and it's easy going lifestyle. This makes it the ideal Motorhome holiday destination. The region abounds in nature's gifts, from the native wildlife which inhabits the lush rainforest to the abundant marine life that inhabits the temperate waters off the picturesque coast line.

The town itself is a melting pot of aussie surf culture, aboriginal heritage, alternative philosophies and pure hedonism. The surrounding towns of Ballina, Lennox Head and Brunswick Heads share this laid back vibe, and the arts loving villages of Bagalow and Mullumbimby manage to combine their laid back lifestyle with just a hint of big city sensibility. The result is a region of coastline that visitors flock back to time and time again. It is worth taking the time to visit some of the surrounding towns to get an insight into the diversity of the region. Each town is no more than 30 minutes drive away from each other and the roads are wide and well sign posted. Visitors on a Campervan holiday will have no trouble finding their way around.

Byron Bay is easy to find, it is just a few kilometers off the Pacific Highway 175kms south of Brisbane. A domestic airport is located in Ballina a mere 30 minutes drive south, or Coolangatta 60 minutes drive north. Busses service the area regularly. While there are a large number of accommodation options Byron Bay residents resist attempts to over develop their pristine backyard. A Motorhome holiday is a great way to visit the area without contributing to the over development of the region.

Average temperatures in summer range from 21C to 28 C and in winter from 15C to 21c. This makes Byron Bay and the surrounding towns extremely pleasant places to live. Visitors and locals enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities all year round. The average rainfall in Byron Bay is relatively high which is responsible for the lush stretches of coastal rainforest.

While there are many things to do and see in Byron Bay the beaches are by far the biggest draw card. The long stretches of white sandy beaches attract holiday makers from Australia and all over the world. The surfing conditions at Byron Bay are world class with something to suit all skill levels. If you do not know how to surf there are many locals offering surf lessons who promise to have you standing or you get your money back.

Scuba divers are also drawn to Byron Bay for the Julia Rocks Marine Park which is a protected area of ocean around an outcrop of uninhabited rocky islands about 3km off the shore. This is considered one of the top 10 dive sites in Australia as it boasts crystal clear water and an abundance of marine life.

In addition to the world class beaches, Byron Bay has a rich and diverse local culture including weekly markets, a wide range of colourful shopping precincts, a well established local live music scene and an exceptional range of regular musical festivals. Campervan travellers and Motorhome holiday makers will appreciate the range of cheap and cheerful market stalls at these markets.

Due to the large number of visitors who frequent the area a number of well established tour guides operate in the area. Tours include a large number of land excursions through pristine rainforests, wildlife habitat and a number of eco tours operate with a strong environmental conscience. Adrenaline junkies are well catered for with mountain bike rainforest tours, hang gliding, sky diving just to name a few.

If you enjoy being part of a crowd or a pumping nightlife then you should visit Byron Bay in the summer months from December to February. Summertime is the main holiday season in Australia and many people travel during their Christmas holidays. Easter is also a busy time as crowds gather to enjoy the East Coast Blues Festival and Roots Music Festival.

For those who prefer a more relaxed holiday a visit during late Summer or Autumn will find the accommodation is cheaper, the beaches a little quieter and locals more welcoming to tourists. Even during the Winter months sunshine is a constant feature as the wet season occurs during the summer months. Even the ocean remains warm enough for swimming most of the year. Motorhome Australia holiday destinations don't get much better than this.
